Adding value in rice production: a study on utilization of rice biomass and by-products in rainfed lowlands in Central Luzon

The objectives of the study are: a.) to determine the extent of the utilization of rice by-products and biomass and their importance as a source of livelihood; b.) to identify farmers’ problems in the effective utilization of rice by-products; c.) to identify engineering technologies for optimum utilization of biomass and increase the economic value of rice by-products. A total of 67 women farmers were selected at random for the survey conducted in 1992-1993 in Gabaldon, Munoz, Nueva Ecija [Philippines]. The average yield was 3.74 t/ha in the wet season and 4.84 t/ha in the dry season. Of the total yield, about 12-13 percent are milled for home consumption with a milling recovery of 58-59 percent. The rice bran contributed 8-9 percent of gross economic value of rice production. The rice straw, 3-4 t/ha, are used as feeds for cattle and carabao and mulch for onions and garlic. Rice straw contributed about 9-10 percent of gross economic value of rice production. Rice bran and rice brewer are used as feeds for swine and poultry. Rice hulls are collected and burned although they can contribute about 0.40 percent of gross economic value of rice production. Women considered rice bran as the most important source of livelihood, followed by rice straw, rice hull, rice brewer and stubbles. The major problems identified include lack of transportation facilities in milling, lack of rice flour mill for processing rice cakes, shortage of labor to collect rice straw, insufficient supply and poor quality of rice bran for animal consumption and inappropriate stoves to utilize rice hulls as fuel. Implications of the study for development and diffusion of technology include field evaluation of microrice mills, and rice hulls stoves and the stripper harvester; and design and evaluation of farmer participatory experiments on the effect of burning rice stubbles in the field on plant nutrition and fertilizer and chemical use.
